Having grown up in tee pees and miners shacks with no electricity or running water and survived fifteen years of treeplanting, I think I've got a head start.
I just heard the north pole is moving toward Russia which favours this part of the world too. With some luck we'll be growing almonds and avocados in a few decades. The coastal winds are blowing nuclear fallout from Japan our way, but the same winds could save us from being buried by volcanic ash when the super-volcano in Yosemite National Park goes boom. Half a million years ago it dumped two meters of ash on Nebraska, 1600 km to the east. I guess it's all a matter of timing, like you pointed out above. I'm trying to be aware of potential danger, but not really planning for it so I'd probably be as screwed as anyone else.

Also, I'd totally survive. I had a dream once that the apocalypse was coming and I heard there was a ship leaving the planet - it kind of looked like a flying titanic - so I hunted it down expecting to have to beg, cheat, steal and lie to get on board. But, when I got there, no one was in line. It turned out that if people couldn't have their tvs, cars and microwaves, they'd rather just die. Just surviving wasn't good enough.
Before they let me on though, I had to know something useful to contribute to the community. So, I made them a mean Manhattan and they let me on. I make the world's best Manhattan.

If you buy the sales pitch, it is obvious that it is always the end of the world. That is why someone wrote "Chicken Little" and it became so popular. The only real apocalypse in North America has been colonization, for our 600 Nishnawbe Nations.

Bugs seem like they would be crunchy. Not sure about that...

What if I use my skillz to invent a tofu tree? And then train the tiny galactic aliens (aka-insects) to guard it from tofu-craving ruffians?
